(Translation from its Arabic origin. Please translate toother languages) Bishmaihun ad Haii Rabbi. Dear Mandaean brethren of the world, A Mandaean blessing to you all. The recent discussions have been deeplyconcerning us regarding Mandaeans who have chosen to intermarry from outside ourcommunity and faith, as well as the validity of their inclusion within thefaith. At this point, the subject has taken unfavorable turns, and for thesereasons, we, the Mandaean Rabbi’s signed below, would like to profess theMandaean laws cited in our holy book, the Ginza Rabba, concerning this matter. In these laws, there is a clear red line which shall not be crossed. For thesereasons, we declare the following: 1. A Mandaean shall not be recognized as suchis he or she marries outside of the Mandaean faith. 2. A Mandaean shall not be aMandaean if he or she is converted to another faith. 3. A Mandaean Rabbi shallnot perform any rites or rituals for a non-Mandaean person or one who has notpreserved his or her Mandaeaism according to points one and two, unless thesefactors are reversed before the conversion process is complete and must berecognized by the Mandaean Rabbi’s. Therefore, a Mandaean is any person borninto the faith by Mandaean parents, baptized by a Mandaean Rabbi and has notmarried outside the Mandaean faith. Mandaean Brothers and Sisters, We, as thereligious Rabbi’s of the Mandaean faith, consider any propaganda of insinuatingor calling for opening or changing Mandaean teachings to be contradictions ofthe Mandaean creed and community, which creates a threat by diminishing theMandaean faith. Such acts would create confusion within the Mandaean community. However, we are saddened by the loss of any Mandaean from the community due tounavoidable cases that were beyond their control. Therefore, as Rabbi’s of thefaith, we are willing to take back those who have a just cause for leaving andtruly wish to be included as Mandaeans after removing the conditions and causeswhich prevent them from being Mandaeans according to our doctrines. As for thosewho have left the faith and wish to remain so, we respect their choice and wewill befriend them and welcome their participation in helping our community justas any other friend of our community from other faiths. Our Dearest Children, You are well aware of our past miseries which we have endured through our longhistory which cost us our most important elements as a community. Our land hasbeen lost, our texts have been destroyed and our language has been forgottenafter years of hiding. In spite of these tragedies, we have been able topreserve our own identity. As such, we assert that we cannot see the separationof the Mandaean faith and ethnicity as a unique ethno-religious community, likethe body which cannot be separated from its soul.
